Paxton

About 11km south-west of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley west of Newcastle - the renowned wine and horse stud region - Paxton gives easy access to the delights of this sophisticated part of the world. There are world-class wineries in abundance, great restaurants and cafes, along with art and craft galleries. And then there are the manicured studs that continue to produce much of the cream of Australia’s race tracks. You can inspect most of the larger wineries and quite a few of the horse studs.

Paxton lies about midway between the coal city of Cessnock and historic Wollombi, staging post in the days when Cobb & Co plied the old north road. The village of Paxton developed round the pithead of Stainford Main No 2 Colliery.

Located 12km south west of Cessnock, this tranquil village of Millfield provides beautiful views of the Watagan Mountains. Millfield as once a stopping place for travelers along The Great North Road and in recent years has enjoyed an increase in population.

Wollombi

Located 27km south west of Cessnock the name “Wollombi” is believed to be Aboriginal for “meeting of the waters”.

Originally a stopping place for travelers on the Great North Road and made famous by “ Dr. Jurd’s Jungle Juice” in the 1960’s. Wollombi village has many historic attractions. It also provides a great base for bush walking in the nearby Watagan State Forest and Yengo National Park was a significant meeting point on the north-south trade and travel route for coastal Aboriginal peoples.

North Rothbury

Rothbury is a small town located in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. It is 10 km from Cessnock. The town became notorious for the Rothbury Riot when police shot into a crowd of miners killing Norman Brown and injuring many more, during a lockout of miners at the local colliery on December 16, 1929. A monument in honour of Norman Brown is located at North Rothbury.
